Uniform/Equipment : General

The uniform the cadets wear is that of the Australian Army, with certain features particular to the Knox Grammar School Cadet Unit.  The way each cadet presents himself in the uniform is a reflection on the entire school community.  All cadets should realise the cadet uniform is not a tool for self-expression and therefore, styles and trends should not be carried over to the wearing of it.  It is important all cadets are responsible for the maintenance and serviceability of their uniform.  If they are not correctly turned out, they not only embarrass the School, they offend the sensibilities and dignity of our armed services and will not be able to blame anyone but themselves when disciplinary action is taken.

Dress
A full list of items in the uniform is contained in the equipment list but the basic items needed regularly are:

Cams

Basic shirt and trousers.  Also known as, in military speak, the DPCU - disruptive pattern camouflage uniform.

  • Cams trousers are ironed flat with a hot, dry iron, without creases in the front or side.  The only time creases need to be ironed into trousers is when polyesters (plain khaki trousers, not cams) are issued to - and promptly returned by - Cadets for ceremonial parades.  These do require creases down the front of the trouser leg - please see What To Wear When section below for ceremonial parades.
  • For the shirt, creases are required down the centre of the sleeve, running from the centre of the epaulette at the shoulder seam to the cuff.   The crease should run on the edge of the elbow patch and through the centre of the cadet blue patch.  All flaps on pockets must be ironed flat while unbuttoned so as not to leave button marks on the flap.
Belt

Two are supplied by the Unit and which one is worn depends on the occasion:

  • On regular home training days, no belt is worn with the cams.
  • On parade, the black belt is worn.
  • In the field, the green belt is worn.
Boots Black boots available from the Knox Shop.  Please see the Boots section below for tips on how to maintain.
Balmoral The Knox Cadet Unit headwear, worn toward the front of the head with no hair showing.  There should be a space equivalent to the width of two fingers above the eyebrows, with the ribbons at the rear running down the centre of the neck.  It should not be worn pulled down like a beanie.
Jumper Worn in Terms 2 and 3 and on any other day weather demands.  The flashes are transferred from the shirt epaulettes to those of the jumper.
Knox Flashes or Slides Small loops made of black and blue felt, slipped over the epaulettes of the cams shirt or, in winter, the jumper.

Please refer to the equipment list and other pages in this section for more detail on how to maintain and present the uniform items.
